Driveway Crack Repairs

Types of Cracks

There are many different kinds of cracks and each can be treated in different ways. Our technicians are trained to use the proper materials and methods in order to ensure the best seal for each kind of crack. Structural Cracks

Larger than ¼” wide. All structural cracks should always be filled along with sealcoating. Large cracks can be filled until they reach approx. 1” wide. Then, we recommend saw cutting and replacing the severe crack.

Hairline Cracks

Less than ¼” wide. Cannot be filled due to lack of space within the crack. The sealer will help protect the crack but will not hide it. Hairline cracks will still be visible after sealcoating.

Surface Cracks

Surface cracks are superficial, cosmetic cracks on the driveway surface. They are almost always caused by sealer being applied too thick. Surface cracks will always still be visible after sealcoating.

Alligator Cracks

Alligator cracks are clusters of cracks in a concentrated area (that may resemble the skin of an alligator). These sections of asphalt have failed and cannot be crack filled effectively. Sealcoating can only help maintain these areas temporarily. At some point, the area must be cut out and replaced with new asphalt. Alligator cracks will always still be visible after sealcoating.

Things To Remember About Crack Filling

Crack repairs are designed to prevent water intrusion – not to hide the crack! 

Depending on the size of the crack, the sealant will slightly settle below the surface of the crack. 

Sealcoating and crack filling will help protect the crack from getting worse, but these repairs will always be visible and will not make the crack disappear. For optimal results, crack repairs should be performed more frequently than the surface sealcoat application.
